True Radical Honesty From Our Community

  • How Your Favorite Comfort Foods Can Affect Your Skin
Did you know, some of your favorite comfort foods are doing your skin no favors? Like, no favors at all.

Let’s get one thing straight: when it comes to what you eat, a bar of chocolate here and a cheeseburger there is totally a-OK. What is it they say? Everything in moderation, right? And we agree. As long as you eat healthily for the most part and allow yourself treats when you want them you’re likely to be just fine.

However, when your meal and snack selections start to not only mess with your weight but also screw up your skin, it may be time to take a look at your diet choices. Because chocolate can’t give you acne, but it can definitely trigger your breakouts.

Whatever your comfort food weakness, read on for the biggest skin offenders that might be worth cutting back on. Of course, unless you have some kind of intolerance or a serious allergy, there’s no need to eliminate them entirely. Just know that if you want your skin to be its absolute best self, the old adage could not be more true – you are what you eat…

    1. Cakes, Candy & Other Sweet Treats

OK, let’s start with arguably the biggest offender of them all: sugar. With zero nutritional value, sugar is the absolute devil when it comes to the health of your skin. How so? Well, in simple terms, sugar is an inflammatory which not only speeds up the rate at which your skin ages, but can trigger acne breakouts as well as flare-ups in existing skin conditions like rosacea, psoriasis and eczema.

Research also shows that excess sugar leads to the accumulation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are harmful compounds produced by the skin through a process called glycation. AGEs are no fun at all as they not only attack your skin cells but they do a real number on important proteins such as collagen and elastin, causing them to stiffen, weaken and perform poorly. All this manifests itself at the surface of your skin in the form of fine lines, wrinkles, dryness, sagging, dullness and, well, you get the picture.

More often than not, sugar cravings are simply the result of habit because sweet ‘treats’ make you feel happy and uplifted by releasing the ‘feel good’ hormone, dopamine, into your system. Refined white sugar and corn syrup are the real bad boys in this picture so avoid these as much as possible, swapping them out for things like honey or natural sugars found in fruit to get your sweet fix.

    2. White Carbs

There is little better than tucking into a chunk of warm, crusty white bread or a pile of spaghetti carbonara of a cold, wintry evening. However, these sit under the refined carbs umbrella. And, note to self, in this case ‘refined’ is most definitely not a positive.

Refined carbs like white bread, pasta and rice are basically carbohydrates that have been processed and therefore stripped of the vitamins, minerals and fiber that make complex carbs so much better for your health and skin. This manufacturing process makes refined carbs easier to digest and offers an instant source of energy. Which may sound great, but this burst of energy is very short-lived (making you want to eat more) and causes a quick rise in blood sugar.

And there we have it: that skin-ruining thing called sugar rises again, which leads to AGEs, inflammation and friends.

Complex carbs are way better than the refined stuff so try to include more oatmeal, sweet potatoes and fruit and veggies in your diet. Less of the white stuff, yes?

    3. Salty Snacks

Sure, sugar is seriously bad news. But salt is just as bad where your skin is concerned. You see, salt promotes dehydration, weakening your skin’s barrier function and killing its chances of remaining soft, supple and strong. What’s more, your favorite salty chips or nuts can contain up to 170mg of salt. Eesh!

Truth is, most salt contains around 40 percent sodium. Sodium draws essential moisture from the skin’s cells into the bloodstream in a bid to balance out fluids. This is important business and helps your body to function properly. But too much sodium in your diet puts this clever balancing act out of whack, pulling excess moisture from the cells and resulting in dehydrated skin that can be itchy, puffy, irritated and flaky-looking.

There’s more. When the skin starts to become dry and dehydrated, it produces more oil to compensate for its lack of moisture. And this can be a killer on your skin if you’re prone to breakouts, blocking up your pores and triggering acne before you can say ‘pass the salt!’

It’s important to remember, however, that salt is crucial for your health so don’t avoid it completely. Just try to use less when cooking and give lower sodium savory snacks like unsalted nuts, crackers or veggie chips a go.

    4. The Processed Meat Gang

Processed meats like bacon, sausages, salami and deli meats are all super-high in salt. So… see above. They also contain a ton of saturated fat and are often packed with preservatives called nitrites to preserve them and help them last longer. Fair enough. Actually, what if we told you that nitrites assist in the breakdown of collagen and elastin? Not so fair enough, after all.

Reminder: collagen and elastin are important proteins that work hard to keep your skin firm, strong and supple. As skin ages it loses vital collagen and elastin which is why it’s important to do everything you can to preserve them for as long as possible. Quality sleep, kick-ass sun protection, topical antioxidants, you know the score. But if you undo all this hard work by overloading your diet with collagen and elastin-killing preservatives like nitrites. Well, you can say goodbye to youthful-looking skin and hello there, premature aging.

    5. Fried Food

It’s estimated that over a quarter of Americans consume fried food from fast food restaurants every single day. Scary right?

Fried foods like burgers, fries, hot dogs and chicken not only raise your bad cholesterol and lower your good cholesterol, but they also increase the number of AGEs in your skin. Remember AGEs ⬆️? Yes, they’re truly the bad guys in this picture. Fried foods, however, produce a whole different kind of AGE to sugar in that they’re not created inside your body, but form within the food when it's cooked at such extreme, dry temperatures.

Studies have shown that dry heat (basically any kind of heat that doesn’t include water) may increase the amount of AGEs in food by up to 100 times. Baking, broiling, roasting and barbecuing all cause AGEs to form in certain high fat/high protein foods (especially red meat), but frying is undoubtedly the worst. Get this: fried bacon contains around ten times the number of AGEs as microwaved bacon. We’re not going to get too technical on you but no, microwaving isn’t a form of dry heat cooking. It’s complicated. Just trust us on that one.

The moral of the story is if you’re worried that your diet is aging you up too fast, think about what you eat and get some balance in your life with more fresh fruit and veggies, unprocessed foods, white meat, fish and legumes.

A great skincare routine can also help to keep your collagen levels in check so why not try our awesome Longevity range which encourages healthy, rather than premature skin aging.

    We like that.

  • Wanna Go Makeup-Free? Then You Need A Consistent Skincare Routine
Not lucky enough to have been born with perfect, flawless skin? Er, who is? Truth is, glowing, makeup-free skin isn’t a given, but requires work with a consistent skincare routine.

Makeup is great. It covers a multitude of sins, makes our best features way better and helps create the illusion of a chiselled jawline or defined cheekbones – even if you were right at the back of the queue when those were handed out.

However, makeup is not a permanent solution for healthy skin. And, heck, sometimes you don’t even want to apply foundation, anyway. Just look at Hollywood right now. The ‘no makeup’ movement is becoming a real thing thanks to stars like Pamela Anderson who, frankly, is looking more gorgeous than ever while showing off her clean, natural skin on the red carpet. And we’re sure she would attest to the fact that the real solution for healthy skin is to find a good, consistent skincare routine.

So, if you’re looking to pare back your makeup routine by cutting out foundation or ditching the bronzer, your skincare needs to be absolutely spot on. Read on for the important steps we believe are the key to getting you there…

    Your Daily Must-Dos

The morning might be your busiest, most frantic time but it’s not one in which to skip essential parts of your skincare routine. A regular morning routine is extremely important for your skin because it sets you up for the rest of the day, giving your skin protection from environmental aggressors while maintaining much-needed moisturization.

Set aside ten minutes or so to crush these five crucial steps every morning, without fail.

    Cleanse

Everyone’s skin is different, so how you cleanse your skin and with which formulations you choose to do it are totally up to you. There are a few important rules to follow, however.

Number one, don’t think facial wipes will give you a thorough cleanse. Hands down, they won't. Proper cleansers are always best. Number two, spend an extra minute massaging your skin as you cleanse – it's a great way to boost circulation and help lymphatic drainage. And number three, never use scolding hot water as this’ll strip important oils and lipids from the surface of your skin, upsetting the balance of your barrier function and potentially causing dehydration.

We have some fantastic cleansers to suit most skin types, wants and needs but to really help get your morning glow on, we recommend Vitamin C Brightening Cleanser.

    Tone

Not everything can be bothered to tone, and that’s OK. But, truthfully, if you want to do the best you can for your skin and want your complexion to really shine without makeup, toning is a great step that literally takes seconds. Not only do toners often contain incredible ingredients to help hydrate, sooth and brighten your skin, but they also help the rest of your skincare penetrate better into your skin. And who can say no to that?

Try our Ocean Minerals Super Toner which contains vitamin C and glycolic acid to protect, brighten and improve skin turnover.

    Treat

After toning and prepping your skin, it would be remiss not to apply some kind of treatment to your face and eyes. We like to apply serum then eye cream to really get the skin going for the day. Again, the products you use are totally in your court but mornings are made for collagen-boosting peptides, hydrating hyaluronic acid, energizing caffeine or antioxidant ingredients like vitamin C, vitamin E and niacinamide.

Our current favorite morning combo is our new Caffeine Facial Serum followed by Depuffing Longevity Eye Cream which helps deal with morning eye bags. No concealer required!

    Moisturize

A great moisturizer is one of the most important ways to keep your skin ticking along nicely all day long. It’ll help seal in your serum so all of its ingredients get to do what they’re supposed to, plus it strengthens and fortifies your barrier function to help your skin retain water and repel toxins. And all this plays nicely into the hands of gorgeous skin that’s ready to take on the world – with or without makeup!

Your choice of moisturizer will depend on your skin type but Firming Collagen Day Lotion is a great option for almost anyone as it does everything a moisturizer is supposed to do, with the added extras of boosting collagen and enhancing your skin’s youthful good looks.

    Protect

Finally, what kind of morning doesn’t call for sunscreen? Answer: no mornings, literally none of them. In fact, sunscreen shouldn’t even have to be something you think about, you should just do it. Applying sunscreen every day will improve the tone and texture of your skin like nobody’s business. Plus, it’ll ward off the signs of premature aging like no other skincare product can even dream of.

The good news is that daily sunscreens have come on leaps and bounds in the last few years. Current formulations are extremely lightweight while maintaining effective, broad-spectrum protection, and they fit seamlessly into your skincare routine with zero effort. Saying that, we can only speak on behalf of our SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen with Vitamin C which checks all those boxes with flying colors.

    The Nighttime Secrets

Day routine, sorted. But what about bedtime? Should your skincare stay the same before you hit the sack or does it need turning up a notch?

Well, as you sleep your skin goes into regeneration mode. Blood flow increases, collagen synthesis accelerates, your skin’s natural antioxidant system kicks in and cell turnover steps up. This means that, yes, you still need to cleanse and tone as you would in the morning to rid your skin of an entire day’s worth of sweat, oil and grime. However, your treatments and moisturizers can definitely benefit from a change of pace…

    Treat

When it comes to your nighttime serum, sure you can stick with the same one you used in the morning, but to really up the ante and help boost the natural rejuvenation process your skin undertakes at night, we like to switch things up.

With what, we hear you ask? With retinol, of course (or bakuchiol!). Retinol is a smart little cookie because it has this innate ability to ‘communicate’ with your skin at a cellular level, accelerating the production of collagen and elastin, improving cell turnover and strengthening your skin to help refine lines and wrinkles and reduce dark spots and acne breakouts. It’s extremely potent, however, which is why it's often advised for nighttime use only. And this is when we like to apply it. Retinol in the evening... brightening antioxidants in the morning, FTW!

Give our Retinol Facial Serum a go for a fabulous overnight skin revamp, or try the equally as awesome Rejuvenating Longevity Serum with Bakuchiol (that’s nature’s gentler alternative to retinol if you didn’t know!).

    Moisturize (With More Intensity)

Intense moisturizing in the morning is not everybody’s jam. And we’re sure that especially rings true if you have oily, combination or acne-prone skin. But rich moisturizers at night that offer an intense boost of hydration and nourishment without clogging up the skin? Now that is something we should all get on board with. And it’s what night creams were made for.

Our Vitamin C Deep Hydration Night Cream is a great way to support your skin as you sleep. Fueling your skin’s overnight renewal process with antioxidant-rich vitamin C and B5, plus aloe and MSM to hydrate and improve the overall health of your skin, we call it our 'smooth skin secret' because it truly helps give us the confidence to go bare-faced and makeup-free.

    The Extra Add-On

Now you’ve got the daily stuff nailed down, there’s just one more addition you mustn’t forget: exfoliation. Regular exfoliation boosts cell turnover and reduces dead skin cell build-up at the surface of your skin. And that’s crucial if you want your skin to look naturally radiant and healthy.

Of course, if your skin can handle it and you use a super gentle formulation like our Vitamin C Gentle Face Scrub, you can potentially get away with exfoliating daily. But that’s not for everyone, so listen to your skin and find your exfoliation sweet spot – be that daily, weekly or somewhere in between.

Keep up this routine and you’ll soon notice healthier-looking skin that needs no help from makeup.

That’s not to say you should never wear makeup again, of course. We don’t know about you but we’d hate to give that up. But still, options.

  • What Is Salicylic Acid And Does Your Skin Need It?
Salicylic acid is right up there with glycolic acid for exfoliating your skin. But it also has an extra string in its bow. Listen up, oily skin folks, this one’s for you…

Salicylic acid is one of those ingredients that truly delivers. Forget your snail mucus and 24k gold flakes because they simply don’t live up to the hype. Along with skincare greats like retinol and vitamin C, however, salicylic acid does exactly what it sets out to do. And frankly, that’s all you can ask from a skincare ingredient, is it not?

If you’re not sure what salicylic acid is all about, not a problem, that’s what we’re here for.

So, read on for everything we know about salicylic acid: glycolic acid’s equally as effective, but really quite different cousin…

    What Is Salicylic Acid, Exactly?

You’ve heard of AHAs and BHAs, right? Well, salicylic acid sits in the BHA camp. In fact, it’s really the only BHA you need to know about being the single most common BHA used in skincare and cosmetics.

BHAs, or beta-hydroxy acids are fat-soluble chemical exfoliants that break down the bonds between your skin cells to encourage them to slough away more efficiently. Physical scrubs have the same effect, but they use physical pressure alongside grains or textured surfaces to exfoliate your skin. Chemical exfoliants just harness the powers of acids like salicylic to do the same job, improving cellular turnover as a major part of the deal.

Salicylic acid, in particular, is extracted from the bark of willow trees and has amazing exfoliating benefits. But there’s more. It also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial qualities (take that, pimples!) and, because it’s fat-soluble, it has an uncanny knack of penetrating into your pores and getting to work on your sebaceous glands. And that’s a big plus if you have super oily skin you find hard to control…

The Benefits Of Salicylic Acid In Skincare

Exfoliants are a crucial part of a healthy skincare routine. Not only do they boost cell turnover to help give you a smoother, softer and brighter complexion, but they also work hard to improve collagen synthesis. And as you mature, that’s really important since collagen degradation becomes a huge deal as you hit your 30s and beyond.

As we mentioned, however, salicylic acid differs to other water-soluble chemical exfoliants like glycolic, citric and lactic acids. And that’s because it’s fat-soluble which allows it to go deeper below the skin’s surface, penetrating through the lipid layers to really get into the pores. We mean no disrespect to the AHAs of the world, of course, because they’re incredible at what they do – which is to exfoliate at a more surface level. But, if you have oily skin or have trouble with breakouts, blackheads or blocked pores, salicylic acid can offer so much more.

Salicylic acid is almost unbeatable at preventing your pores from becoming clogged with dead skin cells and excess sebum, AND it gently exfoliates your skin by loosening the bonds that hold together those tough, outer layers of dead skin cells. This not only improves the tone and texture of your complexion almost immediately, but it stimulates collagen production helping to stave off premature lines and wrinkles as time goes by.

To summarize, the key benefits of salicylic acid are…

            * Exfoliates the skin and removes dead skin cells
            * Improves cellular turnover
            * Balances and controls excess sebum
            * Detoxifies pores
            * Reduces acne breakouts
            * Calms inflammation

5 Ways To Make Salicylic Acid Work For You

Like most active ingredients, salicylic acid must be given the respect it deserves. Here’s how to use it wisely and effectively...

    1. Always Patch Test Salicylic Acid First

Most salicylic acid treatments are well-tolerated by all skin types and safe for daily use. However, there’s always a chance your skin could freak out by this potent, active ingredient, so patch test any new product before applying it regularly. And yes, we know patch testing sounds like a bit of a headache, but it’s really easy and will only delay your product use by a day or so... but it can save your skin a whole lotta pain.

To patch test your product, apply a small amount to a discreet area of your skin (we like to do it behind an ear). Then leave it for 24-48 hours to check for any negative reactions. Most likely, your skin will be fine other than mild redness or tingling which is to be expected with any active product. However, if you experience anything like burning, discomfort, swelling or itching, stop use immediately – this product is not a good fit for you.

    2. Listen To Your Skin To Get Your Routine Right

Once you know you’re safe to use your salicylic acid formulation without any negative reactions, introduce it slowly into your routine. Your skin might be strong enough to take it every day… then again, it might not. Start with once a week and then build on that after a couple of weeks as your skin acclimates. And remember to always read the labels of your products as not all serums are built to be used daily, anyway!

Our Vitamin C Super Serum+, for example, is packed with potent ingredients and combines salicylic acid with other skin superheroes like retinol and vitamin C. Because of this we recommend you apply it just two or three times a week for the best results.

    3. Get The Most From Salicylic Acid By Using A Leave-On Treatment

Salicylic acid can be used in pretty much any skincare formulation, from cleansers and toners, through to exfoliants, serums and moisturizers. To really maximize its benefits, however, we believe that leave-on products offer far superior results to anything you’re going to wash down the plughole. It’s common sense, right?

On that note, try our 6% AHA, BHA + PHA Liquid Exfoliant which is everything for brighter, clearer, smoother-looking skin. Apply it to clean skin, before your serum and moisturizer.

    4. Combine It With Tea Tree Oil

Our Tea Tree Super Serum+ blends salicylic acid with tea tree oil to really hit breakouts from all angles.

Tea tree oil is extracted from the leaves of the Australian tea tree and it has awesome anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial benefits making it a shoo-in for helping to calm facial redness at a surface level. Meanwhile, salicylic acid goes deeper to improve cell turnover and help remove excess oil and dirt that can block your pores in the first place. Together they’re truly dynamite. What’s more, our serum has been crafted to be as gentle as possible while still providing all the benefits you could ever want.

    As we said, dynamite.

    5. Use Sunscreen Every Morning

All experts agree (us, dermatologists, the FDA, need we go on?) that salicylic acid must be used in conjunction with a broad-spectrum sunscreen in order to help protect the skin and avoid sensitivities to UV radiation. It’s basically non-negotiable, so make sure sunscreen is as much a part of your morning routine as cleaning your teeth and brushing your hair.

We like to keep our SPF30 Mineral Sunscreen with Vitamin C right there on the shelf next to our serums and eye cream. That way, we never forget.

  • The 5 Greatest Ways To Preserve Your Skin’s Collagen
Collagen is a pretty big deal. So you must do everything you can to preserve it.

When it comes to the look, feel and overall health of your skin, collagen is everything. Literally, everything. It makes your skin stronger, smoother, more supple and most importantly, it wards off premature fine lines and wrinkles. But, of course, as skin ages, your levels of this important protein fade dramatically, and that’s when the visible signs of aging are likely to start creeping up on you.

The bad news is that you can’t do anything to stop the sands of time. But the good news – because there’s always some good news in there – is that there are many other ways to ensure your collagen doesn’t leave town sooner than necessary. Because it’s not just natural aging that screws up your supplies…

First A Quick Refresher: What Is Collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. As far as your skin is concerned, research shows that it makes up a massive 70-80 percent of its entire structure, working hard to maintain strength, firmness and elasticity. As the clock ticks, however, your skin’s level of collagen starts to dramatically drop off at a rate of around 1 percent every year. Granted, that might not sound like a lot, but believe us, it becomes noticeable very quickly – especially if it starts in your mid-twenties, which is a real probability (gasp!).

So, Why Does Collagen Fade As You Get Older?

Biology for one thing; collagen loss is simply part of the natural aging process.

But that’s not all. Your lifestyle habits, diet, stress levels, sleep routine and the environment in which you live also play their part in how quickly (or slowly) your collagen degrades. And that’s where you come in…

5 Ways To Keep Help Preserve Your Collagen

    1. Never Forget To Wear Sunscreen

OK, let’s start with the most important thing of all, shall we? Sunscreen. As the solution to most aging skin woes, a good quality daily sunscreen is every dermatologist’s and facialist’s number one choice for safeguarding good quality collagen. Full disclosure, it won’t magically make new collagen appear or even kick existing production up a notch. But what it does is far more important, and that’s to preserve the collagen you already have by reducing damage caused by the biggest collagen killer of all – the sun.

Why does the sun get such a bad rap? Because, frankly, it deserves it. UV radiation is the number one cause of external skin aging because it causes an influx of free radicals that weaken collagen fibers, causing them to break down and dwindle at lightning speeds.

Don’t want that to happen to your precious skin? Then do everything you can to stop UV from doing its worst by protecting your skin with a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. Try SPF30 Mineral Sunscreen with Vitamin C, it’s totally up for the job and is so lightweight and easy to wear, you won’t even notice that extra step in your morning skincare routine.

    2. Take A Collagen Supplement

If you want to help feed your body from the inside as well as the outside, consider taking a collagen supplement.

Collagen supplements are powders, pills or drinks that are perfectly safe when ingested as instructed to help promote natural collagen production in the skin. Many of them use animal skin, bones or fish scales though, so if that grosses you out as much as it does us, try our Collagen Boosting Skin Supplement, which says a big fat no to animal-derived collagen. Instead, it’s formulated with vegetarian collagen combined with other skin-loving classics like vitamins C and E, plus biotin, a form of vitamin B known to promote cell growth and repair. Take two capsules every morning for breakfast and see for yourself just how effective they can be...

    3. Sign Up To A Collagen-Boosting Diet

One of the most important changes to make to your diet – if you care about supporting and nurturing your collagen, that is – is to shun sugar. Sugar grabs on to collagen (and elastin for that matter) and forms things called advanced glycation end products (AGEs) which break down all those important proteins, making your skin less plump, strong and firm. And that’s when things like sagging skin and wrinkles like to join the party. No. Thank. You. Try to reduce the amount of sugar you consume on a regular basis and your collagen will breathe a literal sigh of relief.

Then there’s all the good stuff you should eat more of to help support collagen production. These include collagen-rich foods like red meat and bone broth plus high-protein foods like fish, poultry, eggs, dairy and beans.

    4. Apply Some Powerful Topicals

There are no end of collagen-loving ingredients out there, including vitamin C, glycolic acid and EGCG so rather than go on for hours about every topical skincare ingredient available, we’ll just concentrate on the two front-runners in the quest for quality collagen: peptides and retinol.

Peptides are structurally similar to proteins as they’re both made up of chains of amino acids. And this is good news because their similarity makes them almost unbeatable in their effectiveness at stimulating collagen production. Not only that but they’re very well tolerated by the skin, rarely causing sensitivities or irritation. Bonus points right there. Try our Smoothing Collagen Serum which is packed with vegan collagen peptides.

Then you have the mighty retinol which is total kick-ass – although not without its side effects, especially if it’s not treated with the respect it deserves. More researched than almost any other skincare ingredient available, retinol is proven to not only support collagen production but also to prevent future collagen loss. Yes, it’s that good. We, naturally, love Retinol Facial Serum but if you find it’s too much for your skin, NP, we also have our fabulous Rejuvenating Longevity Serum which contains nature’s gentler alternative to retinol, bakuchiol.

    /Size-1 Fl Oz

    5. Try An In-Office Treatment

If you fancy adding on to a great skincare routine and an awesome diet, there are many professional treatments that can help kick your collagen into high gear. Light therapy, for example, is fantastic, as is microneedling which uses tiny, high speed needles to puncture the skin and create ‘micro’ injuries at the surface. This may sound like a dumb idea, but in actual fact microneedling tricks the skin into believing it needs to repair itself, thus triggering collagen production.

Not so dumb any more, right?

Just remember, these treatments are best left to the professionals so search out board-certified experts near you by asking for recommendations or doing some thorough Googling.

  • Big News! Your Favorite TruSkin Products Are Now At Target
We love Target, you love Target, so we’ve expanded our offerings to bring you even more TruSkin favorites at target.com.

Internet shopping is awesome. It literally embodies the word ‘convenience.’ Nothing else allows you to act immediately when you’re sitting on the sofa in your pajamas and suddenly remember that you’re running out of your trusted facial serum. Log on, add to cart, pay and you’re done. It’s also not real money, so there’s that. Ha, if only that were true.

But seriously, we love internet shopping and, as a skincare company, might not even exist if it weren’t for the wonderful worldwide web. However, there’s also something to be said for visiting a store and seeing those beauty shelves packed with moisturizers, cleansers, scrubs and eye creams. It just brings a whole different level of touchy-feely shopping satisfaction to the table.

In our humble opinion, one of the best stores in which to pour over the beauty shelves is Target. Packed with some of the greatest and newest products available, we could easily lose ourselves in that place for hours.

This is why we chose Target to sell a bunch of TruSkin products. Up until recently, however, we only sold our top serums in store (best-selling Vitamin C Facial Serum, anyone?) plus some other favorites like Vitamin C Brightening Cleanser and Peptide Eye Gel at target.com. But we decided we should no longer play favorites but should expand the collection to include some of the newer members of our family.

Read on to discover what’s new at Target...

The Energizing Serum: Caffeine Facial Serum

Caffeine Facial Serum is the newest member of the TruSkin family and, wow, is it a good one, giving your skin a much-needed boost whenever it needs one (so… every morning, right?).

The secret lies in its double shot of caffeine which helps to boost collagen, improve blood flow and reduce inflammation, thus prolonging youthful-looking skin and holding off on the visible signs of aging like dark spots, fine lines and friends. We combine caffeine with another skin-energizing ingredient: EGCG which is a type of antioxidant found in green tea. This further boosts the buzz while improving hydration and providing much-needed protection from environmental stressors like UV radiation and pollution. What’s more, this baby is super lightweight and sinks into your skin like a dream, providing an extra layer of goodness without suffocating your skin. We’re already in love.

The Retinol-Alternative Range: Rejuvenating Longevity Serum, Depuffing Longevity Eye Cream and Renewing Longevity Moisturizing Cream

At the tail end of 2023 we launched a complete new range of healthy aging products called the Longevity collection. Brimming with incredible ingredients and with three expertly formulated products for the skin and eyes, Longevity is based around the buzziest thing in skincare right now: bakuchiol.

Bakuchiol is a botanical extract that’s been used in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine for years to treat skin ailments and diseases. Thanks to its popularity in Ayurvedic practices, it started making its way into western skincare around 2007 and quickly showed promise because of its similarities to the gold standard of skincare, retinol. As you know, retinol is one of the most highly regarded ingredients for improving the tone and texture of the skin. However, it’s really potent and doesn’t suit all skin types, often causing facial redness, unwanted dryness and itching. Enter bakuchiol which offers all the same benefits as retinol (albeit with a little more patience) plus way fewer annoying side-effects – if any at all. Game. Changer.

Our Rejuvenating Longevity Serum, Depuffing Longevity Eye Cream and Renewing Longevity Moisturizing Cream harness all of this, along with ingredients like antioxidant-rich coffeeberry and snow algae, hydrating glycerin and lingonberry stem cells.

The Skin-Fortifying Treatment: Peptide Facial Serum

As skincare ingredients go, peptides are tricky to get your head around. How so? Well, they’re similar to proteins, but they’re not proteins. You see, both are made up of chains of amino acids, but while proteins (think collagen and elastin) are huge molecules containing long chains of amino acids, peptides are their baby cousins, containing much shorter chains. This can be a tad confusing but know this: due to their similarity, peptides help boost your skin’s production of those all-important proteins. And the result? Healthier-looking skin that’s softer, stronger and more supple.

If this sounds like something you want for your skin, you have to try our Peptide Facial Serum which is chock full of powerful peptides including three of the most clinically tested: palmitoyl tripeptide-1, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 and palmitoyl tripeptide-5. Don’t worry, we won’t test you on the names!

The Sensitive Skin Savior: Niacinamide Facial Serum

If you were under the impression that sensitive skin couldn’t get in on the wonders of active ingredients, you could not be more wrong. In fact, sensitive skin is what our Niacinamide Facial Serum was born for.

proven antioxidant, niacinamide (aka vitamin B3) boasts all the usual benefits of your favorite free radical-fighters (vitamin C, retinol and ferulic acid), but it also helps to regulate inflammation and improve your barrier function to strengthen and protect sensitive or easily irritated skin. It can also provide mild relief for acne breakouts, eczema or rosacea. It’s the exact type of facial serum sensitive skin has been searching for. You’re welcome.

The Incredible Exfoliant: 6% AHA, BHA + PHA Liquid Exfoliant

Regular exfoliation is crucial as skin ages and cellular turnover naturally slows down. Skip this step in your routine and all those dead skin cells won’t slough away effectively; instead they’ll hang around at the surface of your skin causing roughness, dullness and dryness.

Of course, the obvious way to exfoliate your skin is with a scrub – as long as you make it a skin-friendly one like our Vitamin C Gentle Face Scrub – but even so, scrubs aren’t for everyone.

So, if ‘everyone’ includes you, you’re going to love 6% AHA, BHA + PHA Liquid Exfoliant, a leave-on chemical exfoliant. Instead of using fine grains to exfoliate your skin, its turnover powers come from exfoliating acids like glycolic and salicylic which break down the glue between dead skin cells to help them slough away at a more effective rate. Simply apply it to cleansed, toned skin, before your serum and moisturizer, then let it do its thing. Genius.

  • What Is EGCG And Why Does Your Skin Need It?
Answer: epigallocatechin gallate, of course. No need for any further explanation, right? Just kidding…

If you’re into skincare you’ll be well aware of topical antioxidants and what they do for your skin. Heck, you may even be on first name terms with the likes of vitamin C, vitamin E, resveratrol and ferulic acid. And hats off to you.

But just to recap, antioxidants are some of the most important ingredients you can incorporate into your skincare routine. You see, they’re the absolute nemesis of one of your skin’s biggest enemies: free radicals. Free radicals damage up your skin at the rate of knots and are formed within the skin’s structure when it’s exposed to environmental and lifestyle aggressors like UV radiation, pollution, stress and a cruddy diet. Once they get under your skin they attack all the good stuff like collagen, elastin, even your DNA, ruining its strength, volume, suppleness and really screwing up the tone and texture of your skin.

To put it bluntly, free radicals are not your friend. Antioxidants on the other hand? Love ‘em.

So, what’s all this got to do with the elusive EGCG? Well, EGCG (aka epigallocatechin gallate) is an extremely hard-working, tried and tested antioxidant that works no end of magic on your skin, including a few benefits that others barely touch on. Here’s what you need to know…

    What Is EGCG, Exactly?

EGCG is not just any antioxidant, but a very specific type called a catechin. Catechins are natural, plant-derived antioxidants found in many teas, fruits, berries, legumes and cocoa. Studies show, for example, that the leaves of green tea are made up of almost 40 percent catechins, with EGCG being the most abundant of them all. In fact, EGCG is the main reason green tea is so highly regarded for its health benefits.

When it comes to skincare, specifically, EGCG is considered to be an incredibly effective ingredient for warding off the visible signs of premature aging.

    How EGCG Benefits Your Skin

    1. Protects Skin From UV Damage

Let’s get one thing straight, no topical antioxidant can take the place of an effective, broad-spectrum sunscreen. However, they’re a fantastic addition to your skincare routine and a great way to further shield your skin from UV damage when used alongside your daily SPF. Of course, they don’t safeguard your skin from burning per se, but they work by fighting off DNA damage and helping to scavenge free radicals before they get a chance to mess with vital proteins in your skin. And that’s something all of us should get on board with.

As antioxidants go, EGCG is up there with the best. For starters, it’s the most tried, tested and trusted of all catechins, plus it rarely triggers irritation or sensitivities, so it can be used by most skin types with very little concern.

    2. Helps Balance Oil Production

EGCG is an antiandrogen which means it helps block the effects that androgens like testosterone have on your body and skin. Androgens can cause your sebaceous glands to produce more sebum than normal, which makes EGCG a pretty useful ingredient for helping to control and balance sebum – great news for anyone who has crazy-oily skin or who suffers with blocked pores or acne.

Hormonal acne, in particular, can occur when androgens become unbalanced during certain stages of life such as puberty, menstruation, pregnancy or the menopause. These hormonal changes often cause sensitivities in the skin which can result in excessively oily skin, coupled with pesky monthly breakouts.

    3. Increases Moisture Retention

Another great reason to incorporate EGCG into your daily routine? It’s awesome for keeping your skin hydrated, supple and well moisturized by regulating and encouraging it to produce hyaluronic acid. As you know, your skin naturally contains hyaluronic acid from birth which helps to keep it soft and supple. However, as you age, your levels of this hydrating powerhouse diminishes, causing dehydration and accelerating the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

We’re big into topical hyaluronic acid and pack it into many of our serums and moisturizers to help keep your skin’s levels in check. (We recommend trying Hyaluronic Acid Facial Serum for some major daily hydration.) However, working on the inside to encourage your skin’s very own HA synthesis? Another big yes from us.

    4. Reduces Inflammation

Studies show that EGCG has anti-inflammatory properties which target and inhibit the molecules and processes involved in inflammation. This is more great news for anyone who sufferers with regular acne breakouts.

Anti-inflammatories are also fantastic for soothing sensitive skin or helping to calm facial redness.

    5. Minimizes The Visible Signs Of Aging

Sun damage, free radical overload, inflammation and dehydration are all terribly aging on your skin, making EGCG an incredible addition to any healthy aging skincare regime. Not only does EGCG work on minimizing fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin, but it can also improve the tone of your skin by helping to reduce the formation of dark spots. That's a big deal.

How To Use EGCG In Your Skincare Routine

We believe to get the most from any active ingredient like EGCG, you’re best off maximizing their worth by using a leave-on formulation like a toner, serum or moisturizer. Wash-off products are great as an added bonus, but leave-ons are truly where all the magic happens.

    t

The good news is EGCG plays well with most other skincare ingredients. If you truly want it to work better and harder, experts recommend combining it with other antioxidants to provide a broad, all-encompassing barrier against environmental damage. All the usual suspects work incredibly well with EGCG but our favorites are soothing niacinamide and hydrating hyaluronic acid which really amp up its super powers. Try our Caffeine Facial Serum to reap the benefits of all of the above plus caffeine (obvs!) to energize and revitalize tired skin.

One final note: EGCG can be pretty unstable so make sure any product you buy comes in a dark container and is stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight. Fail to do that and your formulation will lose its special powers lightning fast.
