The Art Of Choosing & Layering Facial Serums

The Art Of Choosing & Layering Facial Serums

Hardworking and extremely efficient, face serums are super important if you care about looking after your skin. Here’s what we know…

When it comes to the general fight against dryness, dehydration, dark spots, acne, fine lines, wrinkles and, well, need we go on? Good, because the point is, face serums are everything. Sure, cleansers are important for ridding your skin of built-up daily nasties, and of course moisturizers are vital for protecting your skin’s barrier function and maintaining soft, supple skin. But if you want to really target specific concerns, you simply can’t get better than a serum.

As skincare products go, serums are like powerful pocket rockets that work hard to make every skin niggle that much better. Non-greasy, quickly absorbed and super easy to use, serums sit between your toner and moisturizer in terms of when they’re applied. But in terms of their efficacy? They’re right at the top. Literally nothing beats them. And we truly believe that.

Why are they so potent? Well, it’s all about their molecular structure. Now don’t nod off, because this will only take a second and it’s pretty interesting stuff. Unlike heavier, thicker skincare products like moisturizing creams, lotions and oils, serums have a thin viscosity due to their smaller molecular makeup. Because of this, they are able to penetrate the skin deeper and quicker, meaning all those active ingredients get delivered exactly where they’re needed.

The one problem with these little product wonder kids is that there are just too many to choose from. So many, in fact, that it can hard to navigate your way around them. Say your skin is dull, but also feeling kind of dehydrated. Do you go for a supercharged vitamin C serum to tackle your lack of radiance, or would a hyaluronic acid formulation be more your jam? Well, word is that you don’t have to stick with just one because some of them can be coupled up for double the skin loving, without any irritation.

Let’s have a look at our entire range to find out which of our serums work well as a team.

Vitamin C Facial Serum

Containing a much gentler from of vitamin C than some brands, our Vitamin C Facial Serum continues to be the number one seller on Amazon, with over 15,000 reviews and counting! Its secret lies in sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) which is that gentle form of vitamin C we just mentioned. Way less irritating than ascorbic acid, but still hard working, it’s perfect for softening the look of fine lines and dark spots, while nixing free radical damage and boosting collagen production at the same time.

Perfect For: Dull, tired or sun-damaged skin.

Works Well With: Hyaluronic Acid Facial Serum for an extra boost of hydration.

Tip: Our Vitamin C Serum is slightly thinner than the HA Serum so we recommend applying this first, then wait a minute or so before applying HA on top.

Vitamin C Super Serum+

One of our hardest-working facial serums, Vitamin C Super Serum+ contains practically everything your skin needs to look its absolute best. Vitamin C helps improve radiance, salicylic acid accelerates cell turnover, hyaluronic acid works on dehydration and MSM increases collagen production. And that’s not even touching the surface of what else is inside this aptly named super serum. *Cough, retinol.

Perfect For: Most skin types, specifically aging skin.

Works Well With: Niacinamide Facial Serum to strengthen the barrier function and protect your delicate skin.

Tip: We recommend using Vitamin C Super Serum+ just two or three times a week, alternating with Niacinamide Serum morning and night.

Hyaluronic Acid Facial Serum

A real fan-favorite, Hyaluronic Acid Facial Serum is chock-full of, er, hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a key component in the structure of your skin, holding up to 1,000 times its weight in water to keep your skin soft, supple and well moisturized. This serum combines HA with antioxidants, glycerin and aloe vera for the ultimate boost of hydration.

Perfect For: Dry and/or dehydrated skin.

Works Well With: Vitamin C Facial Serum, Peptide Serum or Tea Tree Super Serum+. Try alternating your HA Serum with Tea Tree Super Serum+ to help balance and hydrate oily skin.

Tip: Remember, just because this serum is super-quenching for your skin, it shouldn’t replace your day or night cream. Always follow with moisturizer to help lock in hydration.

Retinol Facial Serum

Say hello to our age-defying must-have: Retinol Facial Serum. One of the most proven anti-aging ingredients in skincare, retinol is a topical form of vitamin A that stimulates collagen production and helps your cells turn over more efficiently. What does that mean in real terms? Less visible signs of aging like lines, wrinkles, dark spots and sagging skin. No biggie.

Perfect For: Aging skin – which, frankly, is all skin above the age of 25!

Works Well With: Peptide Facial Serum to promote collagen production from all angles.

Tip: Contrary to popular belief, retinol can be applied morning or night (as long as you apply plenty of SPF every day), but if you’re combining it with another serum, go for Peptide Serum in the daytime and Retinol Serum before bed.

Tea Tree Super Serum+

If you’re looking for a highly charged serum that laughs in the face of breakouts and greasy skin, then this is a done deal. A great alternative to benzoyl peroxide, tea tree oil is 100 percent natural and has all manner of antiviral, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties. We combine it another powerhouse in the fight against blocked pores and excess oil: salicylic acid. And, sidenote, it might pack a punch, but it’s still gentle on your skin. Result.

Perfect For: Oily, combination or acne-prone skin.

Works Well With: Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide Facial Serums, which both work to hydrate and gently balance oiliness.

Tip: Apply your HA or Niacinamide Serum morning and night, switching it out with Tea Tree Super Serum+ three or four times a week.

Niacinamide Facial Serum

Steeped in soothing properties and blended to deliver clarity, radiance, smoothness and hydration, our Niacinamide Facial Serum could be exactly the kind of reboot your skin is looking for. How so? Because all of niacinamide’s barrier-strengthening and skin-changing benefits come topped off with one important thing – it’s kind to your skin.

Perfect For: All skin types, especially sensitive or problematic skin.

Works Well With: Tea Tree Super Serum+ or Vitamin C Super Serum+. Basically, it loves the Supers ;)

Tip: As with all active serums, ensure you perform a patch test first. Not sure how? We’ve got your back, right here.

Peptide Facial Serum

TruSkin Peptide Facial Serum

A real kick up the butt for flagging collagen, the newest addition to our serum gang is Peptide Facial Serum. After years in the making, this light, antioxidant-rich formula contains some of our favorite youth-reviving ingredients including aloe, green tea, hyaluronic acid, peptides (dur!) and vitamin E. Trust us, you need this in your life.

Perfect For: Dry, thinning or mature skin.

Works Well With: Retinol and Hyaluronic Acid Facial Serums. Try it with retinol to clamp down on the visible signs of aging or with HA to significantly up your skin’s hydration levels.

Tip: Peptide and HA Serums can be used together, twice daily to firm, hydrate and tighten your complexion but if you’re combining it with Retinol Serum, stick with retinol at night only.
